GRADUATION PROJECTS

Starting with the premise of conserving the industrial structures and their possible adaptability of use, we have proposed analyzing and planning the real spatial and programmatic possibilities of complex’s various facilities and their interstitial spaces within the Workshop of Projects E.

Our imagination is sparked in structures that can be transformed to house new activities in the post-industrial era of leisure. But as we look more closely, we notice the fragility of the structure and we see the need to carefully analyze its previous architecture as well as the area around it.

Is it possible to recycle the industrial facilities into a new public space that could potentially house cultural and leisure programs on a citywide scale? Is it realistic to attempt to give the quarry back to the city as a first-class public space? Can the shift in usage be designed as a dynamic process? Can staggered implementations be planned, integrating into the project the negotiation between the programming, the context and the project?

This selection of Graduation Projects tries to answer to these questions. The proposals have been done with total freedom of action in order to become a useful research. All of them have their motivation and therefore all can be argued. Maybe someone will not like all the answers, but it is quite possible that everyone can find in some of their parts a place of accord, a common territory. We invite you to see a diverse selection of the most interesting Graduation Projects developed by the students.

RECOVERING A PRODUCTIVE URBAN ENVIRONEMENT IN CAN CUIÀS

Located in Montcada i Reixac, the site is a fragile urban wasteland crossed by several transport infrastructures. The area is characterized by the presence of a tributary of the Besòs river and an obsolete industrial settlement, surrounded by the neighborhoods of Can Cuiàs, Montcada i Reixach, Ciutat Meridiana and Vallbona.

The existing infrastructures on the site cause a difficult connection between the neighborhoods and it segments the landscape continuity towards the existing agricultural zones next to the Besòs river.

The project is an opportunity to revitalize an urban area almost abandoned, connecting the different fragments of the urban surroundings and restoring the fragile fluvial landscape of the site; recovering the existing vegetable gardens and recycling the industrial settlements with new activities.

In addition to providing jobs and augmenting incomes, the new productive urban environment in Can Cuiàs can foster civic and community engagement and also become the new scenario to bring people closer to nature rhythms.

Teaching Team: Xavier Vancells (Projects Department, coordinator), Josep Gómez (Structures Department), Claudi Aguiló (Technology Department).

SAGRERA CINEMA: RECONVERSION OF AN INDUSTRIAL AREA

This semester we have chosen an industrial block near the Sagrera park. In this area of study there is a convergence of tissues, uses, typologies and topographies, which are diverse, ambiguous and have a great potential of transformation.

Avoiding the expected planning for the area, which includes the demolition of the industrial units and their replacement with ordinary blocks of flats, we propose a new program for the existing buildings. This program must be capable of: using the existing naves; infiltrating through the various corners of the block; reactivating the obsolete areas; reconnecting the city with its surroundings; and become a model for urban areas alike.

Within the generic name of Sagrera Cinema, much of this project process has consisted in finding the appropriate definition of the program for each particular vision of the problem. We are satisfied to see how in this projects workshop have emerged different projects, with different approaches, on the same site.

Teaching Team: Enric Massip-Bosch, Sergi Serrat (Projects Department), Josep Gómez (Structures Department), Claudi Aguiló (Technology Department).
